Ankle Stability

Brief summary

This study aims to evaluate the acute effect of standardized taping of the dominant ankle on lower limb asymmetry during the countermovement jump (CMJ) test in healthy judokas. Forty healthy, active judokas aged 18-35 years will perform CMJ testing under two conditions: with and without standardized ankle taping. Lower limb asymmetry and selected biomechanical parameters will be measured using the Meloq EasyBase force platform. The results may improve understanding of the effects of ankle taping on jumping performance and contribute to injury prevention strategies in sport.

Detailed description

Ankle sprains are among the most common musculoskeletal injuries in sports and may impair proprioception, postural control, and functional performance. Standardized ankle taping is widely used to improve joint stability and reduce the risk of recurrent injury; however, its acute effects on lower limb asymmetry during jumping remain unclear. This interventional, within-subject study will include 40 healthy, active judokas aged 18-35 years. Participants will complete countermovement jump (CMJ) testing under two randomized conditions: without ankle taping and with standardized taping applied to the dominant ankle. Following taping, participants will complete a 5-minute familiarization walk before testing. Biomechanical variables will be assessed using the Meloq EasyBase force platform. The primary outcome is lower limb asymmetry in net propulsive impulse during the CMJ. Secondary outcomes include asymmetry in peak propulsive force, asymmetry in peak propulsive power, and jump height. The findings may contribute to evidence-based recommendations regarding the use of ankle taping for injury prevention and performance optimization in healthy athletes.

Intervention model description

Participants will complete both study conditions (with and without standardized ankle taping) in a randomized order, with each participant serving as their own control.

Inclusion criteria

* Healthy male and female judo athletes aged 18-35 years. * Regular participation in judo training (minimum 3 training sessions per week). * No musculoskeletal injury of the lower extremities within the previous 6 months. * Willingness to participate and provide written informed consent.

Exclusion criteria

* Current pain or injury affecting the lower extremities or spine. * Previous lower-limb surgery. * Neurological, vestibular, or balance disorders. * Allergy or intolerance to adhesive sports tape. * Refusal or inability to provide informed consent.
