Inclusion criteria

* initiating enteral nutrition within the first 24-48h after intensive care unit (ICU) admission * age more than 18 years * Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II (APACHE II) score \>8

Exclusion criteria

* not expected to survive 24 hours * pregnancy * any terminal stage disease
