Inclusion criteria

* ICU patients who require mechanical ventilation for at least 2 days * the ability to speak English * willing to participate

Exclusion criteria

* patients who require mechanical ventilation at home before hospitalization * patients previously requiring mechanical ventilation at an LTAC facility
