* Patients with essential hypertension * Patients with body mass index ≥ 30 kg/m2

Exclusion criteria

* Severe hypertension * History or evidence of a secondary form of hypertension * History of Hypertensive encephalopathy or cerebrovascular accident. Other protocol-defined inclusion
