* Symptomatic diastolic heart failure * Breathlessness with physical exertion

Exclusion criteria

* Uncontrolled hypertension * Asthma, COPD, or abnormal lung function * History of stroke, myocardial infarction, heart failure, chest pain, abnormal heart rhythm * Liver, kidney, or pancreas disease * Allergy to valsartan Other protocol-defined
