Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: The study participants will include adolescents who receive the intervention and teachers who deliver the prevention education program. Eligible adolescent participants are students aged 10 to 15 years who are enrolled in elementary or middle schools in Busan, Republic of Korea, and belong to classes recruited for this study. They must be able to participate in the program in a school environment with internet access through digital devices such as smartphones, tablet computers, or desktop or laptop computers. Participation requires that students receive an explanation of the study purpose and procedures, agree to participate, and obtain consent from a legal guardian. Eligible teacher participants are teachers affiliated with participating elementary or middle schools who are designated to deliver school smoking prevention education. They must provide informed consent after receiving an explanation of the study purpose and procedures. If multiple classes are recruited from the same school, one teacher designated to deliver smoking prevention education at that school will be included as a study participant. For focus group interviews, eligible teacher participants will be those who actually deliver the metaverse-based e-cigarette use prevention program in the experimental classes. Eligible adolescent participants will be students in the experimental classes who participate in the metaverse-based program, express willingness to join the focus group interviews, and provide consent to participate.
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: Adolescent participants will be excluded if they are unable to participate in the metaverse-based program or related study procedures due to difficulties in using digital devices. Students will also be excluded if they have difficulty communicating in Korean and are therefore unable to participate in the program, complete surveys, or take part in interviews. Teacher participants designated to deliver smoking prevention education will be excluded if they do not provide informed consent. Teachers will also be excluded if they are unable to directly deliver smoking prevention education to the participating classes during the study period, or if they cannot participate in key study procedures, including teacher training, program implementation, and surveys. For focus group interviews, teacher participants will be excluded if they did not actually deliver the intervention program in the experimental classes or do not consent to participate in the interviews. Adolescent participants will be excluded if they did not participate in the intervention program, do not wish to join the focus group interviews, or if student consent and guardian consent are not confirmed.
