Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Participants were eligible for inclusion if they met all of the following criteria: (1) aged between 19 and 64 years, (2) had access to a smartphone or computer with internet connectivity and were able to complete an online survey, and (3) provided informed consent prior to participation. This study targeted potential users who were likely to encounter digital therapeutic explanatory materials rather than recruiting clinical patient populations. To ensure contextual relevance of the explanatory content, condition-specific screening criteria were applied. For the insomnia digital therapeutic experiment, participants were required to have an Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) score of 8 or higher. For the nicotine dependence digital therapeutic experiment, participants were required to report smoking at least five cigarettes per day. These criteria were used solely to enhance relevance of the study materials and did not constitute clinical diagnosis or patient-based recruitment.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Participants were excluded if they met any of the following criteria: (1) younger than 19 years or older than 64 years, (2) lacked access to a smartphone or computer with internet connectivity or were unable to complete an online survey, (3) did not provide informed consent prior to participation, or (4) did not meet the condition-specific screening criteria (ISI score below 8 for the insomnia experiment or smoking fewer than five cigarettes per day for the nicotine dependence experiment). Individuals requiring clinical diagnosis or medical intervention, or those recruited as patients for therapeutic purposes, were not included in this study.
