Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: We conducted a retrospective review of patients treated for SSNHL in Kyung Hee University Hospital at Gangdong between January 2007 and March 2023. The inclusion criteria for participants were as follows: (1) diagnosis of SSNHL, defined as hearing loss greater than 30 dB at three or more consecutive frequencies, developing within 72 hours; (2) first examination and treatment (SS and/or ITS) occurring within 14 days after onset; (3) failure to achieve full recovery after initiation of SS and ITS within 14 days after onset; (4) unknown cause of hearing loss;(5) no fluctuation in hearing loss; and (6) availability of pure-tone audiometry (PTA) results acquired before and after the steroid treatments (SS and ITS).

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: The exclusion criteria were as follows: (1) patients with SSNHL originating from ear trauma, noise, tumor, otitis media, and Ménière’s disease and (2) patients with hearing loss in both ears or coexistence of conductive hearing loss.

The acupuncture treatment group was divided into four subgroups based on the initial degree of hearing loss and the age at diagnosis. The pure tone audiometry (PTA) results before and after treatment were examined for each subgroup.
