Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: The subject selection criteria were healthy adults aged 20–35 years. Suitable subjects were selected after the navicular drop test (NDT).

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: The exclusion criteria included the following: congenital malformation or disease of the lower extremity, pain in the lower extremity, neurologic history, and surgical operations of the lower extremity.

NDT of the dominant foot was performed to select subjects. From this test, 36 patients (male 12, female 24) in the flexible flatfoot group and 36 patients (male 10, female 26) in the normal foot group were selected, and static balance and COP excursion during walking were measured in both groups as a pretest. An exercise to induce abductor hallucis fatigue was performed in the sitting position. For fatigue, the surface EMG was used. Two electrodes were placed on the muscle belly of the abductor hallucis parallel to the muscle fiber direction, and a ground electrode was placed on the medial malleolus (Fig. 2). The subjects performed isotonic contraction of the abductor hallucis 75 times at 40 repetitions per minute according to the speed of a metronome, and a short foot exercise was performed in which the first metatarsal phalangeal (MP) joint was flexed while the first interphalangeal (IP) joint was extended [12]. The static balance and COP excursion were measured again after abductor hallucis fatigue occurred, and the measurement order was randomized before and after each exercise. Each exercise was performed three times, and the average value was calculated.
