Interventions

Behavioral : Telephone-based MI was provided to the participants twice a week for 4 weeks. Each session lasted for 10 to 20 minutes. The intervention was administered by an experienced registered nurs
of the intervention recordings to assure treatment fidelity. In the first session, the participants were provided with an introduction to the program, a schedule was established, and the behaviors tha
finally, the researcher supported their goal setting efforts, and the session was terminated. The participants of the control group received usual care from a physician at an outpatient clinic

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1. Has a diagnosis of HF (NYHA classes I–IV) 2. LVEF = 45% 3. Age: 40–80 years 4. Is clinically stable, and life expectancy > 6 months according to the primary physician 5. Taking more than one medication as a part of the treatment for HF 6. Is able to communicate and does not have hearing difficulties or cognitive problems

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. Has a secondary diagnosis of HF because of congenital heart disease 2. Is scheduled for heart surgery or has undergone heart surgery during the past 3 months 3. Has been engaging in regular exercise (frequency: > three times a week, duration: 30 minutes per session) during the past one month 4. Is participating in another study 5. Is unable to walk independently because of physical problems
