Interventions

Others(Professional oral hygiene care) : The experimental group received oral hygiene care from nurses (using oral swabs and CHX (0.12&#37
solution) 24 hours after placement in the mechanical ventilator and every 8 hours thereafter. Dental hygienists provided additional professional oral hygiene care (using toothbrush, CHX 0.12&#37
solution, and cotton ball) every 24 hours. The control group only received oral hygiene care from nurses (using oral swabs and CHX 0.12&#37
solution) 24 hours after placement of the mechanical ventilator and every 8 hours thereafter. The intervention was implemented over five days for both the groups.

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: The inclusion criteria were the following: mechanically ventilated adult patient, aged 20 years and above, admitted to the trauma ICU, and patients whom the attending physician found to be capable of receiving oral management.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: when patients or their legal representatives declined to participate in the study, when patients were not well enough to receive oral management, when patients could not receive oral management owing to severe maxillofacial injury, and when patients could not receive oral management for other reasons. Finally, we excluded patients who were diagnosed with pneumonia or were pregnant at the time of admission
