Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: We included preterm infants born at <34 weeks of gestation and aged >2 weeks at the time of enrollment. Stable preterm infants at the time of undergoing baseline investigations were considered eligible. We defined a stable clinical condition as follows: 1) stable respiratory status as defined by an arterial oxygen saturation of at least 85% by pulse oximetry in an inspired O2 concentration of =30% and a mean airway pressure of =8 cm H2O if on assisted ventilation, 2) no signs of sepsis or renal disease, and 3) those who were not treated with sedatives, diuretics or inotropes.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Infants were excluded from participation for any of the following reasons: 1) cardiac problems except patent ductus arteriosus or patent foramen ovale, 2) clinically severe disease of a major organ system, 3) requirement of surgical interventions, or 4) emergency transfusion.
