Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: (i) type 3 or 4 extraction socket morphology (= 3 mm of hard tissue loss in 1 or more socket walls) according to published extraction socket classification (Caplanis N, et al. Extraction defect assessment, classification, and management. J Calif Dent Assoc 2005; 33: 853-863), (ii) no systemic disease contraindicating surgical procedures or compromising wound healing, and, (iii) clinically healthy periodontal status or treated/well-managed periodontal disease (bleeding on probing and plaque index < 25%)

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: (i) current smoker (= 10 cigarettes per day), (ii) pregnancy or lactation, (iii) uncontrolled or untreated periodontal disease, and (iv) inability to understand the trial purpose and provide informed consent.
