Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Inclusion criteria were as follows: 1) more than 20 years old; 2) more than 20 natural teeth; 3) >2 mm attachment loss and >3 mm probing pocket depth.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1) less than 20 years old; 2) less than 20 natural teeth; 3) brushing with a powered toothbrush; 4) pregnancy; 5) acute or chronic immune disturbances; 6) gingival hyperplasia because of the use of immunosuppressive drugs or calcium-channel blockers; 7) taking antibiotics, steroids, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and anticoagulants at the beginning of the program or the clinical examinations; and 8) inadequate cognitive ability.
