Interventions

Procedure/Surgery : intervention group was given infratrochlear nerve block, which was performed subcutaneously by injecting 0.5 or 1 or 1.5 cc of 2&#37
lidocaine with 1:100,000 epinephrine with the 30 G needle at the notch in the orbital rim just above the medial canthal tendon. As a treatment of OCR, if the HR was a more than 30&#37
decrease from the baseline value—which was defined as mild OCR, the surgical procedure was stopped. If the HR still did not return to around baseline value or if severe bradycardia developed (HR &lt
40 beats/min) —which was defined as severe OCR, intravenous atropine (0.01 mg/kg) was administered.

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Sixty patients with a physical status of American Society of Anesthesiologists classification I, who were scheduled for elective strabismus surgery to correct intermittent exotropia were enrolled into this study.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Patients who had 1) strabismus other than intermittent exotropia, 2) combined other ocular diseases (e.g. nystagmus, amblyopia, and ptosis), 3) neurological or cardiovascular disease, 4) history of previous strabismus and ocular surgery, or 5) were receiving antiepileptic or other medications known to affect ECG were excluded.
