Drug : In patients in whom asthma is well controlled by inhaled steroids alone (ICS) for more than 6 months, the inhaled steroid therapy group (fluticasone = 250 µg / day or budesonide = 400 µg / day

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1) aged over 18 years 2) physician-diagnosed asthma 3) an evidence of reversible airway obstruction with positive bronchodilator response [>12% improvement in percentage of forced expiratory volume in 1 sec(FEV1) and at least 200 ml after inhalation of 180 mg of albuterol] or an airway hyper-responsiveness with positive methacholine bronchial provocation test [provocative concentration of methacholine causing a 20% reduction in FEV1=16 mg/mL] or FEV1 variability of greater than 15% during outpatient visit and 4) FEV1 greater than 70% of expected value.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Exclusion criteria included any of followings; cigarette smoking more than 10 pack-years, history of pulmonary tuberculosis with aftereffect, bronchiectasis or emphysema in chest X-ray, patients who are about to start immunotherapy and who take any kind of immunomodulatory like systemic corticosteroid, leukotriene modifier, theophylline and tiotropium.
