Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: They had no major cognitive impairment (Korean version of the Mini-Mental State Examination [MMSE-K] score = 20). Even if patients had more than mild communication deficits and/or cognitive impairment (MMSE-K score < 20), they were included if their guardians agreed.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: hematologic disease (blood coagulation defect, anemia, etc.) and fluid therapy or treatment with pentoxifylline, isoxsuprine, naphtidrofuryl, bencyclane, piracetam, ginkgo biloba extract, troxerutin, or rutosides, which could affect erythrocyte deformability.
