Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: (1) first cerebrovascular accidents verified by computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging, (2) hemiplegic stroke with gait disturbance, (3) independent ambulation with cane for 10 m, with or without orthosis, or a score of 4 or 5 on the Functional Ambulation Classification (FAC) scale (no need for assistance), and (4) sufficient cognition to participate in the training as assessed by a Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score of 25 or higher.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: (1) neurologic co-morbidity other than stroke, (2) cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, or other medical condition that could influence gait or oxygen consumption, (3) refusal to participate in the present study, or (4) recurrent stroke
