Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: patients aged = 65 years who were classified as American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) physical status I or II and scheduled to undergo elective laparoscopic or open gastrectomy for gastric cancer

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: : patients taking sedatives or psychotic drugs : patients with dementia, or central nervous diseases or psychiatric diseases with cognitive impairments : patients with a condition preventing proper evaluation of cognitive functions such as speech and auditory impairment : patients with a preoperative Mini-Mental State Exam score = 23 : patients undergoing a combined operation other than gastrectomy

MeasureTime frame
frequency of delirium (using a Confusion Assessment Method) within postoperative 3 days

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
severity of delirium (using a Delirium Index) within postoperative 3 days;frequency of cognitive dysfunction (decrease of two points and more than preoperative Mini-Mental State Exam score) within postoperative 3 days
