Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Eligible participants were fully from 18 year to 71 year-old, both genders who had no other disease except TMD, complaining of TM-related pain at one side or both sides irrelevant to disease interval, Positive Axis I Group I diagnosis on the Research Diagnostic Criteria (RDC) for temporomandibular disorders, and may have no contraindications to TMD acupuncture treatment.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Participants were excluded if they had previous surgery for treatment of TMD pain, history of rheumatoid disease or degenerative arthritis, extensive anatomical destruction or deterioration of the TM joint, and diagnosed as having pain of neuropathic or odontogenic origin, had a plan to pregnant in the next 3 months, and whose TMD were caused by non mechanical or spiritual factors. Finally if they had less than 4 points at both TM function score scale and VAS (visual analogue scale) they were excluded.
