Design outcomes
Primary
| Measure | Time frame |
|---|---|
| First-pass success rate (First-pass success is defined as advancing the nasogastric tube to the intended insertion depth in a single insertion procedure without completely removing the tube, and confirming placement within the stomach by suctioning gastric contents or auscultation of the epigastric region. The position of the nasogastric tube as determined by postoperative X-ray is treated as a safety endpoint.) | — |
Secondary
| Measure | Time frame |
|---|---|
| Procedure duration (from nasogastric tube placement to confirmation of gastric sounds), number of pass attempts, and number of insertion attempts (defined as the number of times the nasogastric tube was withdrawn partway without being completely removed and then reinserted. The number of reinsertion attempts is defined as the number of times the nasogastric tube was completely removed from the mouth and reinserted from the beginning.), and postoperative sore throat assessment (24 hours postoperatively). Hemodynamic changes before and after nasogastric tube placement were set as exploratory secondary endpoints. Mean arterial pressure and heart rate were recorded before the start of nasogastric tube insertion, immediately after reaching the planned tube length, immediately after confirming the tube position, and 3 minutes after completion of placement. | — |
