Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: COPD group: Male patients aged 40 years or older with COPD will be enrolled in the COPD group. The diagnosis of COPD will be based on the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) 2025 criteria. Patients with stage 1 COPD, who are expected to have little structural change in the lungs, will be excluded. Patients with stage 2, 3, or 4 COPD will be included. Patients with comorbidities other than respiratory diseases will not be excluded solely on the basis of those comorbidities, unless the investigator determines that participation is inappropriate. IPF group: Male patients aged 40 years or older with IPF who are currently receiving treatment at our hospital will be enrolled in the IPF group. The diagnosis of IPF will be based on the 2022 international clinical practice guidelines for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and progressive pulmonary fibrosis. Patients with comorbidities other than respiratory diseases will not be excluded solely on the basis of those comorbidities, unless the investigator determines that participation is inappropriate. Healthy group: Male subjects aged 40 years or older will be recruited through flyers and the website. Subjects without chronic respiratory diseases will be enrolled in the healthy group. Subjects with comorbidities other than respiratory diseases may also be enrolled, unless the investigator determines that participation is inappropriate. Smokers and subjects with a history of smoking may also be enrolled. If a subject initially enrolled in the healthy group is diagnosed with COPD or IPF through study related examinations, the data of that subject will be analyzed as part of the COPD or IPF group, respectively, rather than the healthy group.
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: In the COPD group, patients with asthma may be enrolled, but subjects with respiratory diseases other than COPD or asthma will be excluded. In the IPF group, subjects with respiratory diseases other than IPF will be excluded. In the COPD group, IPF group, and healthy control group, subjects with significant changes in lung structure due to past tuberculosis or surgery will be excluded.
