Interventions

Evaluation of gastric emptying by oral administration of a barium ball is a minimally invasive and simple method, allowing accurate data collection while reducing the burden on participants.

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Patients who have undergone metabolic bariatric surgery at our institution and have completed one year of postoperative follow-up. Age: 18 years or older Sex: No restrictions Patients who have provided both oral and written informed consent Other surgical eligibility criteria follow the 2024 Comprehensive Obesity Treatment Guidelines for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: The barium ball in this study is made from Arloid-G, barium sulfate, and Calcium Lactate. Patients listed under Contraindications, Precautions for Specific Backgrounds, or Use With Caution (Drug Interactions) in the package inserts of these agents will be excluded.Details of these categories will be summarized in the table below. Additionally, patients taking drugs that fall under these precautions will be excluded.Patients with a history of intestinal obstruction will also be excluded.

Gastric Emptying Function Participants will orally ingest forty barium balls under X ray fluoroscopic guidance Abdominal CT imaging will be obtained within thirty minutes The duodenal small intestinal emptying rate and gastric retention rate of the barium balls will then be calculated Barium Ball Emptying Rate Number of barium balls in the duodenum or small intestine divided by forty multiplied by one hundred Barium Ball Retention Rate Number of barium balls remaining in the stomach divided by forty multiplied by one hundred Weight Loss Outcomes Body weight BMI and percentage of total weight loss TWL TWL Preoperative weight minus postoperative weight divided by preoperative weight multiplied by one hundred
