Inclusion criteria: Participants were selected using a two-stage stratified random sampling method from individuals holding Japanese nationality and registered as residents in Japan.

A) Gambling preferences among the general adult population: Types of gambling experienced during the past 12 months (e.g., pachinko/pachislot, horse racing, bicycle racing, motorboat racing, auto racing, lotteries, sports lotteries such as toto, and overseas casino gambling). B) Gambling-related harms: Financial harms: presence of debt due to gambling, experience of bankruptcy. Relationship harms: family conflict, deterioration of marital relationships, experience of divorce. Health-related harms: psychological distress (Kessler-6 score), presence of suicidal ideation. Employment/Education-related harms: impact on work, presence of unemployment. Legal harms: criminal problems or legal troubles (none reported). Protective factors against gambling-related harms: presence or absence of consultation/help-seeking behavior related to gambling disorder or gambling-related problems.	—
