Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Patients who underwent esophagectomy for esophageal cancer between July 2010 and March 2019 were identified from a Japanese nationwide inpatient database.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: The exclusion criteria were as follows: age <18 years, combined surgery for laryngeal or hypopharyngeal cancer, missing data on body mass index, having received general anesthesia on the day after esophagectomy, and discharge on the day of or the day after esophagectomy.
