Organophosphate toxicity

Interventions

Treatment with 4g of magnesium sulfate IV + up to 10 g IM in addition to standard therapy with atropine. Standard therapy with atropine.

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: All patients presenting to the Poison Control Centre diagnosed with moderate to severe organophosphate toxicity.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Heart block on ECG; History of Myocardial Infarction; History of hypersensitivity to magnesium sulfate; Hypercalcemia and/or hypermagnesemia.

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
Rates of morbidity and mortality in the hospital, and up to ten days post-discharge.

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
Side effects/toxicities attributable to magnesium sulfate treatment; Length of hospital stay; Duration of signs and symptoms of toxicity; Doses of other drugs used.
