Additional 1.5 ml of blood sample will be withdrawn to analyze presepsin and other markers at the routine blood examination.

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Feverish patients need blood analysis to rule out bacterial infections in the pediatric emergency division and pediatric outpatient clinic. Fever is defined as the presence of an axillary temperature >=38 degree C. Serious bacterial infection is defined as the presence of bacteremia, urinary tract infection, pneumonia, meningitis, osteomyelitis, septic arthritis and/or sepsis. All patients or their guardians are required to sign a consent form.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Patients who have 1) received antibiotic treatment within 48 hours , 2) a fever caused by vaccination, 3) had surgery within 7 days , and 4) a fever lasting longer than 3 days before admission and patients considered ineligible for this study.

MeasureTime frame
Study 1. To evaluate the cut-off value of presepsin in the diagnosis and assessment of pediatric bacterial infections. Study 2. To evaluate the correlation between clinical symptoms and white-blood cell count, absolute neutrophil count, C-reactive protein, procalcitonin, Interleukin 6 and presepsin levels.
