Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: (1) adult patients aged from 18 to 65 years (2) admitted for elective surgery under general anaesthesia (3) anticipated moderate to severe pain on the postoperative day 1, measured by numeric rating scale (NRS) greater than 4 (4) anticipated length of stay of at least 48 hours after surgery
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: (1) American Society of Anaesthesiologists (ASA) Physical Status Classification System class of ASA IV or ASA V (2) inability to consent or refusal to consent (3) contraindications to acupuncture (coagulation dysfunction, sepsis, skin infections or open wounds at needle sites, severe needle phobia) (4) postoperative plan to intensive care unit (5) history of chronic opioid use
