Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Patients were included based on the following six criteria: 1) Age between 60 and 85 years. 2) A score of >8 and =35 on the 24-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD-24) . 3) A history of illness lasting two weeks or more. 4) Exclusion of patients with other severe mental disorders. 5) Absence of severe underlying diseases affecting the cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, respiratory, hepatic, renal, hematological, endocrine, nervous systems, or other major systems. 6) No prior treatment with antidepressant medication, electroconvulsive therapy, transcranial magnetic stimulation, or other therapeutic interventions before participating in the study, or discontinuation of such treatments for more than one month.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Patients were excluded based on the following five criteria: 1) depression caused by various diseases; 2) comorbid with other severe mental illnesses; 3) accompanied by other serious underlying diseases; 4) a history of convulsions or risk of convulsive seizures; and 5) those with contraindications to acupuncture such as bleeding tendency or coagulation disorders, or patients with local skin ulcers.
