Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Inclusion Criteria for Adolescents with Depression: a. Recruited from the Psychology Clinic of the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine; aged 10 to 24 years; b. Right-handed; c. Meet the diagnostic criteria for primary depression as defined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 5th Edition (DSM-5) and the International Classification of Diseases 10th Edition (ICD-10); d. Score >17 on the 17-item Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD-17). Inclusion Criteria for Healthy Adolescents: a. Aged 10 to 24 years; b. Right-handed; c. Score =7 on the HAMD-17.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Exclusion Criteria for Adolescents with Depression: a. Use of antidepressant treatment within 3 months prior to enrollment; b. History of other psychiatric disorders; c. History of neurological trauma or surgery; d. Presence of systemic diseases affecting the central nervous system or major organ diseases such as those involving the heart liver or kidneys; e. Secondary depressive episodes caused by other diseases; f. Contraindications to MRI scanning such as metal implants stents or pacemakers; g. Claustrophobia. Exclusion Criteria for Healthy Adolescents: a. History of neurological or psychiatric disorders including previous neurological trauma surgery or other neurological conditions; b. Presence of systemic diseases affecting the central nervous system or major organ diseases such as those involving the heart liver or kidneys; c. Contraindications to MRI scanning such as metal implants stents or pacemakers; d. Claustrophobia.
