Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: Critically ill patients with the Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score greater than or equal to 8 on 3 of the 5 successive days within 7 days after admission to ICU.
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: 1. Patients under age of 18 2. Missing written informed consent from a legal proxy 3. Pretreatment in ICU >7 days

| Primary outcome measures for both observational and interventional studies: Insulin sensitivity: 1. Studies of the insulin receptor pathways such as IRS, PI3K, AKT and Glut4 will be performed 2.
