Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1. Pregnant women between 16–24 weeks gestation 2. Aged 16 years or older 3. Residing within the selected study areas in Khayelitsha, South Africa 4. Able to communicate in isiXhosa 5. Willing and able to provide informed consent (or assent with caregiver consent for participants under 18 years)

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. Current severe mental health crisis posing risk to self or others 2. Current symptoms of psychosis

MeasureTime frame
Whether progression to a full-scale effectiveness trial is warranted based on the CHIME intervention and trial procedures being feasible and acceptable, measured using recruitment rates, attendance rates, retention rates and intervention fidelity at post-intervention

Depressive symptoms measured using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) at post-intervention and 6 months post birth;Anxiety symptoms measured using Generalised Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) at post-intervention and 6 months post birth;Symptoms of common mental disorders measured using the Self Reporting Questionnaire-20 (SRQ-20) at post-intervention and 6 months post birth;Psychological well-being measured using the WHO-5 Wellbeing Index at post-intervention and 6 months post birth
