Interventions

N-acetylcysteine 600 mg twice daily or matching placebo. All participants received standard care including oxygen, nebulised salbutamol, oral prednisone and antibiotics (if indicated).

Inclusion criteria: Patients admitted to hospital with an acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
