Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1. All patients undergoing routine elective thoracic surgery especially open thoracotomy procedure with patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) and epipleural insertion 2. Provision of written informed consent 3. Aged 18 years or over

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. Patients who are having epidural anaesthesia 2. Patients undergoing emergency operation 3. Refusal to take part in the study

MeasureTime frame
1. Pain is measured using the Likert scale pain scoring system at baseline (2 hours pre-operatively), 1, 3, 6, 12, 24, 48 and 72 hours postoperatively 2. Effect of pain on postoperative peak flow pressure is measured using spirometry at baseline (2 hours pre-operatively), 1, 3, 6, 12, 24, 48 and 72 hours postoperatively

1. Use of pain medications is assessed by reviewing patient drug charts on discharge from hospital 2. Mobilisation is assessed by reviewing physiotherapy records on discharge from hospital
