Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Nursing and residential homes in South Manchester. 12 matched nursing and residential homes were randomised to either the control or intervention group. Within each home, 10 residents were selected by staff to participate on the basis that they presented an active care management problem. The key workers to each of the participating residents took part in the training programme. There were 98 staff in total, 51 of whom worked in the homes receiving the intervention.

The main outcome measures for residents were cognitive impairment and depression, behaviour disturbance, and active daily living skills. The General Health Questionnaire was used to assess levels of psychological distress amongst care staff and a modified version of the Quality of Interactions Schedule was used to code the quality of interaction between staff and residents. An economic evaluation of the intervention was performed.
