Eligibility

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1. Aged over 49 years old 2. Acute admission to Peterborough District Hospital with a hip fracture

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. Patients being treated conservatively 2. Patients having surgery under local anaesthesia 3. Patients who have a preference for one form of anaesthesia 4. Patients (or their next of kin) unable or unwilling to give written informed consent 5. Patients in which either the attending surgeon or anaesthetist feels one method of anaesthesia has preference over the other
