Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
Muscular strength and muscle hypertrophy. Timepoint: Before intervention and after 8 week intervention. Method of measurement: The golden standard method of dynamic strength testing is the 1-RM test, which can be performed by using both free weights and machines, ACSM (2013). In this study, the 1-RM value was measured indirectly through the 5-RM test because participants with no experience of weight lifting and any other exercise are likely to be injured if they perform the 1-RM test. The tests were performed before and after 8 weeks of resistance training using bench press (upper body) and barbell back squat (lower body). The 1-RM value was predicted by inputting the amount of weight lifted and the maximum number of repetitions into the RM estimation formula, Brzycki M, (1993): 1- RM = lifted Weight ÷ (1.0278-(0.0278 × Number of repetitions) (Distasio, T. 2014). and The study used a muscle circumference test on the thigh muscle to measure the participant's muscle hypertrophy or size (Fang, C. Y., et al., 2023). The reliability of the test according to the inter-correlation coefficient, for left and right thigh ICC= 0.99, ICC= 0.99, respectively (Fang, C. Y., et al., 2023).
