Interventions

Intervention 1: Intervention group: Apixaaban 2.5mg twice daily for 4 weeks. Intervention 2: Control group: Enoxaparin 4000 IU daily for 4 weeks.

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Patients with an objective diagnosis of colorectal cancer, regardless of the stage of the disease Patients scheduled for elective laparotomy for colorectal cancer

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Surgery for non-cancerous disease Known brain metastases Known hemorrhagic diathesis or high risk of bleeding History of intracerebral hemorrhage or neurosurgery within the past 6 months Renal failure defined as creatinine clearance <30 mL/min according to the Cockcroft Gault equation Hepatic failure Acute hepatitis Active chronic hepatitis Cirrhosis Alanine aminotransferase level 3 times or more above the upper limit of normal Bilirubin level twice the upper limit of normal or higher History of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia Age less than 18 years Pregnancy Breastfeeding Refusal of informed consent

MeasureTime frame
Venous thromboemboli. Timepoint: Daily until discharge the on the days 14, 28 and 90. Method of measurement: History and Physical examination.;Ultrasound-confirmed deep vein thrombosis. Timepoint: Daily until discharge the on the days 14, 28 and 90. Method of measurement: Color Doppler ultrasound.;Severe bleeding within 28 ± 2 days (1 month) of planned laparotomy for colorectal cancer. Timepoint: within 28 ± 2 days (1 month) of planned laparotomy. Method of measurement: History and Physical examination.;Death within 28 ± 2 days (1 month) of planned laparotomy for colorectal cancer. Timepoint: Within 28 ± 2 days (1 month) of planned laparotomy. Method of measurement: Physical examination.
