Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Registered nurses and nursing students in their final year, currently employed in the pediatric and neonatal units at Afzali-poor Hospital. Participants will engage in a brief 15-minute orientation session on utilizing a mobile application, and they should be willing to give written consent. All participants are assumed to have equal proficiency in drug administration and dosage calculation, as it is a part of their routine practice and training. Furthermore, inclusion criteria extend to nurses with access to and the capability to use cell phones.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: The study will exclude participants who have previously used or installed drug administration or dosage calculation apps on their mobile devices.

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
The primary outcome will be the duration, measured in seconds, required by the nurse to calculate drug dosages using both the application and traditional methods. Timepoint: Throughout the duration of the intervention. Method of measurement: To ensure a realistic and relevant context, the research team will develop scenarios based on the insights of two experienced nurses and the prescriptions provided by the hospital’s physicians. The precise timing of drug dosage calculations, for both the application and traditional methods, will be recorded using the digital stopwatch tool available on smartphones.

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
We will measure some secondary outcomes: medication dosage error rate and severity. Timepoint: this outcome will be measured following the completion of the intervention. Method of measurement: The severity of the error will be measured by the nurse using the NCC MERP index based on the type of medication and the amount of the error.;Usability satisfaction. Timepoint: This particular outcome will be assessed following the completion of the intervention. Method of measurement: usability satisfaction is assessed via the Questionnaire for User Interaction Satisfaction (QUIS).;The efficiency of the application. Timepoint: this outcome will be measured from the start to the finish of the intervention. Method of measurement: The performance criteria of the application will be evaluated by collecting potential errors and bugs identified by nurses throughout their usage of the system.;Assessment of the procedure for calculating drug dosage and its formulation. Timepoint: This particular outcome will be assessed following the completion of the intervention. Method of measurement: Each nurse’s medication administration process will be evaluated and scored based on the 9 right medication principles. The scores will range from a minimum of 1 to a maximum of 9.
