Interventions

Intervention 1: The first group will receive n-acetylcysteine 1200 mg daily in two divided doses for 12 weeks. Intervention 2: The second group will receive placebo for 12 weeks.

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Age over 18 years Methamphetamine dependence, as assessed by the substance abuse section of the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV On methadone maintenance treatment Seeking treatment for methamphetamine use Written consent to participate in the study

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Serious medical illness Current neurological disorder including organic brain diseases, dementia or psychiatric disorders unrelated to methamphetamine abuse, including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder or attempted suicide within 30 days before commencement of the study Present or recent use (within 2 weeks) of over-the-counter or prescription drug that would be expected to have major interaction with n-acetylcysteine Current dependence on cocaine, alcohol and benzodiazepine History of head trauma Pregnancy Metabolic diseases such as diabetes and neurological diseases such as epilepsy Impairment of liver function tests

MeasureTime frame
Methamphetamine craving. Timepoint: The beginning of the study - every two weeks until the twelfth week. Method of measurement: Visual analogue scale (VAS).;Methamphetamine severity dependence. Timepoint: The beginning of the study - every two weeks until the twelfth week. Method of measurement: Addiction Severity Index (ASI).

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
Negative urine test for methamphetamine. Timepoint: Once every fifteen days. Method of measurement: methamphetamine urine test.
