Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: Inclusion criteria: having high level of serum uric acid (serum uric acid level greater than 6.5 mg/dl (men) or greater than 5.5 mg/dl (women). This definition was based on analyses from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) Study; Exclusion criteria: uric acid level of serum less than 6.5 for men and less than 5.5 for women, known history of allopurinol hypersensitivity or those who already were on allopurinol
