Mental disability often occurs after cardiac surgery, which may be due to inflammation of the brain. Prophylactic cortisone treatment may suppress the brain inflammation and reduce the degree of mental disability after cardiac surgery.

Prophylactic treatment with methylprednisolone may reduce the cerebral inflammatory response and reduce the severity of cognitive dysfunction after cardiac surgery
