Inclusion criteria: -Adult Males and Females able to give consent -Chronic hepatitis C virus infection Are the trial subjects under 18? no Number of subjects for this age range: F.1.2 Adults (18-64 years) yes F.1.2.1 Number of subjects for this age range F.1.3 Elderly (>=65 years) yes F.1.3.1 Number of subjects for this age range

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: -Type 2 Diabetes -Decompensated liver cirrhosis (stable patients with cirrhosis would be eligible) -Clinically significant co-morbidity

Measure	Time frame
Main Objective: We wish to ascertain whether metformin therapy, given for 2 weeks, results in a significant (i.e. greater than 1 log drop) change in the hepatitis C viral load in patients with chronic HCV infection. ;Secondary Objective: We will also assess what effects the metformin has by measuring: i) markers of insulin resistance ii)the distribution of lipids present in patients' serum samples iii)markers of inflammation of the liver ;Primary end point(s): Whether metformin therapy results in a greater than or equal to one log drop in HCV RNA load.	—
