Single shot caudal anaesthesia is the most common regional anaesthesia method in children. The recent study is designed to evaluate: 1. The cephalic spread of 0.7, 1.0 and 1.3 mL/kg local anaesthetic for caudal blocks in a paediatric study population by ultrasonography (part 1) and 2. To determine the necessary volume of local anaesthetic for caudal anaesthesia to achieve a spread to the Th12 level (part 2).

Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: Children (age: preterm-born babies – 6 years [maximum weight 25kg]) scheduled for unilateral hernia repair Are the trial subjects under 18? yes Number of subjects for this age range: F.1.2 Adults (18-64 years) no F.1.2.1 Number of subjects for this age range F.1.3 Elderly (>=65 years) no F.1.3.1 Number of subjects for this age range
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: General contraindications against caudal blocks - known blood coagulation disorders, systemic inflammation, inflammation in the area of the site of injection, anatomical abnormalities of the lumbosacral spine No parental informed consent
