Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Men and women between the ages of 30 and 60 and physical inactivity as well as without or with central obesity and MetS or DM-2. Training status: within the last six months no targeted endurance or strength training or training-effective physical activities (such as ball sports), no history of competitive sports. As a criterion for central, truncal obesity and further diagnostic criteria of a metabolic syndrome (3 out of 5 criteria result in the diagnosis), the specifications of the International Diabetes Federation are used (IDF, 2005):62 1. Waist circumference of = 80 cm (?) or = 94 cm (?), 2. Elevated triglycerides = 150 mg/dl or medical treatment, 3. Reduced HDL cholesterol < 40 mg/dl (?), < 50 mg/dl (?), 4. Elevated blood pressure systolic = 130 mmHg and/or diastolic = 85 mmHg or medical treatment, 5. Elevated fasting plasma glucose value = 100 mg/dl or medical treatment.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Individuals with internal medical or orthopedic conditions for which maximal exertion or running training is contraindicated are excluded. Female and male individuals with a relative maximal oxygen uptake of = 45 or 50 ml/min/kg, respectively, are excluded, as they are considered trained. Further exclusion criteria include anemia requiring treatment, a resting blood pressure of = 160/100 mmHg, uncontrolled hyperglycemia, a total cholesterol level of = 300 mg/dl, and a BMI of > 40 kg/m², as intense running training is not recommended for the latter individuals due to orthopedic reasons. Individuals with manifest pre-existing neurological or psychiatric conditions are also excluded from the study, as well as individuals with claustrophobia or mask anxiety. The intake of medications that can directly influence target parameters (e.g., beta-blockers) also leads to exclusion, as does pregnancy.

The aim of the study is to determine the perceived exertion, affective valence and action crisis, heart rate, oxygen uptake and lactate concentration, as well as their interdependencies, during 4 runs with different intensities but identical training dose. The perceptive examination parameters are recorded at 9 isocaloric time points using validated single-item scales, heart rate and oxygen uptake are recorded continuously using telemetry and breath-by-breath analysis respectively, and lactate concentration is recorded via capillary blood sampling at 4 time points.
