Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: - neurotypically developed - aged between 18 and 40 years - all genders included - normal or corrected to normal vision - no colour blindness - signed informed consent

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: - Any history of neurological or psychiatric disorders - Possibility of pregnancy - Any known cardiac health issue - Any known respiratory health issue - Any stay beyond 1500m above sea level within the last 14 days before testing (so that participants are not acclimatised; which would most likely reduce the effect of hypoxia) - Consumption of recreational drugs or more than three small glasses of alcohol within the last 24 hours - Substantial sleep deprivation

Primary

MeasureTime frame
During the intervention (i.e. under hypoxia or normoxia): In the EEG recordings the primary endpoints will be - N2 and P3 event-related potential components in response to congruent and incongruent flanker stimuli (in the flanker paradigm) - frontal-midline theta amplitude (rhythmical brain activity around 5 Hz that is best captured over midfrontal electrode sites) in the working memory task and the n-back task -in fNIRS recordings during the n-back task the primary endpoints are oxygenated hemoglobin concentration (oxy-Hb) and deoxygenated hemoglobin concentration (deoxy-Hb) estimates from midfrontal and lateral prefrontal recording channels - Behaviourally, the primary endpoints will be task accuracy costs (incongruent trials minus congruent trials) and response time costs in the flanker task, - task accuracy in the visual working memory task, and - d-prime (as a measure of task accuracy) in the n-back task.

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
Before the intervention: - VO2max within a 19.7% oxygen environment. During the intervention: - Respiration rate and volume recorded with a breast belt. - Peripheral blood oxygenation and heart rate recorded with an infrared plethysmography sensor attached to the ring finger of the left hand.
