Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Case reported by a participating maternity unit, perinatal centre, or collaborating healthcare institution Availability of sufficient clinical information for documentation within the registry Pseudonymised data collection in accordance with registry requirements Maternal deaths according to the World Health Organization (WHO) definition (death during pregnancy or within 42 days following termination of pregnancy, irrespective of the duration or site of the pregnancy) Late maternal deaths (>42 days and <1 year after the end of pregnancy) may be recorded and analysed separately Stillbirths according to the definitions applicable in Germany at the time of registration

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Cases that do not meet the definition of either a maternal death or a stillbirth Miscarriages according to the legal definitions applicable in Germany Live births without documented intrauterine fetal death Duplicate reports of the same event Cases with insufficient data quality preventing classification according to the registry criteria Accidental or incidental causes of death unrelated to pregnancy may be recorded within the registry but will be analysed separately from maternal deaths as defined by the WHO.
