Group 1: As study-related procedures, clinical routine data will first be collected and processed in pseudonymised form within the hospital in order to assess possible eligibility for study inclusion.

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: - Admission to the intensive care unit - Arterial blood pressure monitoring - Invasive mechanical ventilation via endotracheal tube or tracheostomy tube - Deep sedation (RASS -3 to -5)

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: - History of spontaneous pneumothorax - Known pregnancy - Pre-existing Child C liver cirrhosis - Physical impairment, such as spinal instability, preventing passive leg raising - Insufficient ultrasound accessibility for data acquisition

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
Change in the total VExUS score induced by modulation of positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) and by a preload manoeuvre (passive leg raise) at the time of the study visit. Assessment will be performed by ultrasound examination.

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
1. Exploratory analysis: renal function during the subsequent course of intensive care treatment. 2. Exploratory analysis: correlation of the measured parameters with laboratory markers of congestion, such as NT-proBNP, if available. 3. Exploratory analysis: correlation of echocardiographic parameters with PEEP level and the passive leg raise manoeuvre.
