Eligibility
Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: Patients between the ages of 4 and 39 with a histologically confirmed diagnosis of Ewing Sarcoma or osteosarcoma were included in the study. Patients were identified by means of the electronic patients records in the hospital information system. Patients had to receive neoadjuvant first-line chemotherapy according to protocol (EWING 2008/ EWING 2012/ iEuroEwing or EURAMOSS/COSS), undergo surgical removal of the tumour and receive histopathological processing of the tumour cells according to Salzer-Kuntschik at the time of surgery. Furthermore, patients were included only if supervised exercise therapy sessions between diagnosis and surgery were reliably documented.
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: Exclusion criteria were inoperability of the tumour, which is often associated with radiotherapy, or cases of recurrence therapy.
Design outcomes
Primary
| Measure | Time frame |
|---|---|
| The primary endpoint of this retrospective study is the impact of supervised exercise therapy sessions during neoadjuvant chemotherapy on the proportion of viable tumor cells at the time of surgery in patients with Ewing sarcoma or osteosarcoma. The proportion of viable tumor cells will be dichotomized (<10% vs. =10% viable tumor cells) based on established histopathological criteria and previously published study findings | — |
Secondary
| Measure | Time frame |
|---|---|
| The secondary outcomes are to evaluate the effect of supervised exercise therapy during neoadjuvant chemotherapy on changes in tumor volume and to examine the potential influence of age and body mass index (BMI) on tumor activity. Additionally, subgroup analyses will be performed to determine whether disease staging and metastatic status are associated with participation in supervised exercise therapy sessions | — |
