Inclusion criteria: Age of majority (= 18 years) Histologically confirmed malignant disease of the esophagus Planned curative esophageal resection at the UKM Capacity to provide informed consent Written informed consent

Exclusion criteria: Refusal to provide study consent Minority (< 18 years) Inability to obtain biological samples Medical or organizational reasons precluding study participation
